Coursework

At Clemson University, I pursued a well-rounded curriculum that reflected my passions for health, science, and Spanish. My health and science courses provided a strong understanding of human systems and the principles of health, while my Spanish studies sharpened my language skills and cultural awareness. Together, these areas of study equipped me with practical knowledge and a global perspective, creating a solid foundation for a successful career in the health field.

Health

HLTH 2020: Introduction to Public Health 

This course offers a basic introduction to public health examining the factors that influence health delivery systems, health practices and trends. It also introduces public health theories and models, including the general systems theory.

HLTH 2980:
Human Health and Disease

This course provides an overview of behavioral, biological, and psychosocial factors that are attributed to major human diseases and conditions like obesity. This course also emphasized the best health practices to use to avoid developing a human disease or condition like obesity.

HLTH 3800: Epidemiology

This course provided an introduction to epidemiology, focusing on its principles and methods. It also examined the origin, distribution, and control of diseases.

HLTH 2030:
Overview of Health Care Systems 

This course provided an overview of the American health care system, exploring its foundation, key characteristics, resources, and processes. Topics included fee-for-service, managed care, integrated care organizations, and issues related to access, cost, and quality of care in the American health care system.

HLTH 3030:
Public Health Communication

This course introduces the importance of health communication. It also goes over the importance of social marketing strategies to create effective and evidence-based health communication messages for health promotion.

HLTH 4700:
Global Health

This course expanded knowledge of global health and international public health work. It covered assessing global health needs and designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating public health programs worldwide.

HLTH 2400: Determinants of Health Behavior

This course introduced health behavior theories and analyzes health behaviors based on physiological, social, cultural and environmental factors.

HLTH 3610: Introduction to Health Care Economics

This course provided an introduction to the basic economics of the healthcare industry, focusing on the supply and demand within the healthcare system and the factors influencing health care availability and costs.

HLTH 4900:
Research Evaluation Strategies for Public Health

This course examines research in the health field primarily focusing on analyzing research. Also included in this course are ethical, moral and legal issues involved in research.

Science

BIOL 1030+1050: General Biology I

​​This introduction to biology course focuses on the evolution of cells, cell activities, genetics, and animal diversity. The accompanying lab built skills in using biological instruments, conducting experiments, and analyzing results which were presented in lab reports.

BIOL 2230:
Human Anatomy and Physiology II

This course was a continuation of Human Anatomy and Physiology I, offering an in-depth study of systems such as endocrine, reproductive, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, and digestive. It also covered fluid and electrolyte balance. The course included both classroom instruction and a laboratory.

NUTR 2030: Introduction to Principles of Human Nutrition:

This course explores the functions and requirements of nutrients like factors influencing food choices, dietary adequacy, and the impact of nutrition on physical fitness. It also covers social and scientific issues, emphasizing the evaluation of nutrition information from various sources like government, academic, private, and healthcare sectors.

BIOL 1040+1060: General Biology II

This course is a continuation of General Biology I. It focuses on human anatomy, physiology, plant diversity, morphology, and ecology from an evolutionary perspective. It includes both classroom instruction and a laboratory.

CH 1010:
General Chemistry

This course introduces basic chemistry concepts like chemical reactions, symbolic representation, the mole concept, and molecular structure. This course combined classroom instruction and also a laboratory for hands-on experience.

PSYC 2010: Introduction to Psychology

This course introduces the basics of psychology including the study of behavior which includes examining biological bases of behavior, learning, thinking, motivation, perception, and social behavior. It also explores human development and applies basic principles to areas like education, personal adjustment, and interpersonal relationships.

BIOL 2220:
Human Anatomy and Physiology I

This course provides a basic introduction to human anatomy and physiology, focusing on cells, tissues, and systems such as the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. It also covers sensory organs with an emphasis on physiology. This course was taught in a classroom and also in a laboratory.

LANG 3910:
Medical Anthropology

This course is a brief introduction into medical anthropology focusing on a interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach to health, illness, and medicine. It also examines key theories, concepts and methods while applying it in a global context.

SOC 2010: Introduction to Sociology

This course introduces the sociological perspective focusing on the study of different groups and organizations in different  human social behaviors like social change, structures or institutions.

Spanish 

SPAN 2010+2020: Intermediate Spanish

This intermediate Spanish course focused on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while reinforcing grammatical structures and basic vocabulary.

SPAN 3070:
The Hispanic World: Spain

This course was taken in preparation for a study abroad semester in Spain. This course was an overview of the culture,  social, historical, and political aspects of Spain. It also included the contemporary issues of the Iberian Peninsula. 

SPAN 4110:
Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition

This course was taken abroad in Seville, Spain, it focused on enhancing fluency in oral communication through presentations and improving writing skills through structured papers.

SPAN 3020: Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition

This course offered an in-depth review of Spanish grammar, verb usage, idiomatic expressions, and vocabulary. It also introduced syntax and stylistics through guided and independent writing exercises.

SPAN 3150:
Spanish for Health Professionals 

This course was taken abroad in Sevilla, Spain. Spanish for Health Professionals introduced medical concepts and terminology in Spanish, providing a foundation for communicating effectively in healthcare settings.

SPAN 4180:
Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals 

This course focused on technical health communication in Spanish, with a close examination in the managerial and business aspects of the international health industry. It also included a literature review of a Latin American country's health care system.

SPAN 3040: Introduction to Hispanic Literary Forms

This course examined elements of fiction, poetry and drama with readings from the 19th-20th century Spanish literature. This course also included several essays about the literature read in class. 

SPAN 4000:
Food and Culture 

This course was taken abroad in Seville, Spain. It explored the local cuisine and culture of Seville, providing an in-depth understanding of regional traditions and culinary practices.

SPAN 4190:
Health and the Hispanic Community

This course explored the cultural aspects of health in Hispanic communities. As part of the course, a literature review on a health-related topic was conducted to deepen understanding of these cultural influences.
